NOW FILMING: "Ekstra," Vilma's "first" indie project

Vilma challenges herself yet again with her first foray into indie cinema, this time playing the role of a teleserye bit player.

“Sister Stella L.” (1984): Vilma At Her Finest

(CLICK ON IMAGE TO SEE MORE) One of the most important Filipino films, Sister Stella L (1984), is about a nun's political awakening amid a labor uprising. Directed by master auteur Mike De Leon, it showcases Vilma’s restrained, unadorned acting. The final scene where Stella gives a speech and delivers the unforgettable line “Katarungan para kay Ka Dencio!” (“Justice to Ka Dencio!”) is purely stirring. Vilma was conferred the Best Actress plum by the Manunuri Ng Pelikulang Pilipino, the country's most respected critics group. The film was selected for competition at the 1985 Venice Film Festival.

Her grand-slam win is recognized as the first ever in local film history. The death scene towards the film's end is one of Philippine cinema's most unforgettable moments. It triumphs as a prime example of realistic cinematic acting.

Major Impact of the Year” for 2012 by a wide margin, garnering 102,827 votes, constituting 56% of total votes cast, thus eclipsing nominees Dolphy, Nora Aunor, Sharon Cuneta, and Bong Revilla. Vilma’s win had more impact because she bested nominees who were newsmakers during the first half of the year. Nora Aunor was on a comeback and just had her soap opera and Sharon Cuneta was in the news for her controversial transfer to TV5 and her Twitter war issues. Dolphy was very much a headliner because of his failing health and eventual demise. Despite stiff competition, Vilma Santos prevailed, via a landslide. A testament to her enduring charm and true star power. This win is even more memorable because the votes came from not just her active Vilmanians, but also from silent fans and admirers. A win that is legitimate, clean, and stripped of politics and hocus-pocus. A win that is worth cherishing.
